CHRISTCHURCH
Christchurch Canterbury
Canterbury - bordered in the West by the Southern Alps and in the East by the Pacific Ocean - is New Zealand's largest region with a vast landscape of outdoor nature and adventure opportunities. Christchurch, New Zealand's oldest city, is a city of art, culture and beautiful gardens!
Christchurch is certainly a great place to visit and enjoy your New Zealand holiday and with out top inner city location the Best Western Camelot Motor Lodge offer guests the opportunity of fine dining at many of our premier Christchurch restaurants, enjoying our unique Christchurch cafe culture, exciting nightlife and a shopping choice that will excite everyone.
Christchurch is the largest of all the South Island cities with a population in excess of 300,000. If you are planning a NZ holiday Christchurch is a great place to stay. Situated at the confluence of the Heathcote and Avon rivers with a back-drop of the Port Hills, Christchurch is the hub of the South Island. Make Best Western Camelot Motor Lodge your first choice for Christchurch New Zealand accommodation.
Visitors immediately notice the very English style layout of the city, with its central square and parallel streets running east west and north south. It also has many fine examples of Revival Gothic architecture such as the Christchurch Cathedral, and the Arts Centre, once the town’s university. Both buildings are just a 15 minute walk from the Best Western Camelot Motor Lodge.
With a great number of parks and the mature trees that are everywhere, the name the Garden City is very apt. To the west the city is flanked by the Botanic Gardens in Hagley Park, the most famous of all the many parks in the greater metropolitan area and the perfect place for an evening stroll, an early morning run or even a round of golf.
The Avon River is a focal point for relaxation where you can enjoy an afternoon watching various wildlife, the occasional canoeist or take a trip on the very English Punts enjoying champagne & strawberries and a picnic hamper. Punting on the Avon is 10 minutes walk from the Best Western Camelot Motor Lodge.
The city has a working Victorian tram system that takes visitors on a loop around the central city. Visitors can see some of the many historic buildings, including iconic New Regent Street, or relax at the Art Centre and enjoy the variety of local crafts and ethnic food stalls and galleries. The Arts Centre is also home to the Court Theatre, Southern Ballet Theatre and the Canterbury Film Society. Nearby attractions include the Art Gallery, the Canterbury Museum and the Christchurch Casino. Best Western Camelot Motor Lodge offers unique accommodation near Christchurch attractions and the Central Business District.
Christchurch is within a short driving distance of several South Island ski fields. The skiing season runs from June to November. Mount Hutt and Porter Heights ski fields are 90 minutes by car.
AKAROA
Just an hour’s drive from Christchurch is the iconic French enclave of Akaroa. The village has a unique place in New Zealand's history as the only French settlement in the country. Akaroa is 85 kilometres south east of Christchurch on the Banks Peninsula. The lovely bayside town has many streets with French names and is the oldest town in the Canterbury district. One weekend every September the village hosts its famous French Frolic – a weekend celebrating its French heritage. In the centre of the village is the wharf from which boat charters can take you to view the rare Hectors dolphins and picturesque features of Akaroa Harbour – a remnant of an old volcano. An alternative is to book a berth on a majestically restored sailing sloop that runs a day charter service.
Penny and Brian at the Best Western Camelot will help you to organize your day at Akaroa and suggest the best places to stop on the way over as there are some real gems to be found. Penny's favourite stop is the Little River Cafe and Art Gallery which has some amazing finds and Brian's favourite is the French farm Winery - a beautiful French inspired building where you can sit and soak up the wonderful views while sipping on a delicious New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and nibble away at something mouth watering,
HANMER
Just a 90 minute drive away from Christchurch towards the Southern Alps is the alpine village of Hanmer Springs. The town is famous for its refreshing and relaxing natural hot spring pools. The thermal waters of the pools contain a wide variety of minerals including sulphur, sodium chloride, calcium, carbonates, magnesium, potassium and others. Originally the town was used as a health retreat for those suffering from arthritis and similar ailments. Now people travel there to unwind in the warm pools surrounded by native landscaping and surrounded by mountains. Hanmer Springs Village has grown rapidly over the last few years and offers a variety of outdoor activities and great cafes.
